Author Interview - Lian Dolan
Author I draw inspiration from: I’ve long-admired Anna Quindlen for the breadth of her writing career, from New York Times columnist to novelist to personal essayist. I admire Jennifer Weiner for her wit and fearlessness. And I love Nick Hornby for bringing pop culture into his work in meaningful way.
Favorite place to read a book: In my living room, on my cozy couch, with a fire and a cup of tea. (Or a glass of wine, depending upon the time of day!)
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Lisbeth Salander. I’m very claustrophobic and I would need to get out of that elevator fast. I feel like the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo could spring us in seconds.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: After reading Harriet the Spy in fourth grade. Keeping copious notes, making sharp inciteful observations and taking no prisoners all seemed right up my alley. Plus, the hoodie. It all seemed to be a glorious way to approach the world.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Hardback at home, ebook on the plane and audio book on long drives in the car, and paperback for the ones I missed the first time around. I love mixing it up and taking it all in. A good story comes in many forms.
The last book I read: Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas. That’s a creepy college! A must-read for the summer.
Pen & paper or computer: Notes on index cards and then the real work on computer.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Bernadette Fox. Funny, artsy, Cynical. My kind of gal.
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: an NBC Olympic correspondent, specializing in swimming and figure skating so I could go to both Summer and Winter games.
Favorite decade in fashion history: Always right now! I’m not a nostalgic person. Let’s keep moving on and wearing what makes up happy and looks great, mixing a vintage classic with a touch of trendy.
Place I’d most like to travel: To Alaska to see those bears scoop that salmon out of the river. C’mon! That looks like a magical place!
My signature drink: The Italian Greyhound (Vodka, Grapefruit, Aperol, seltzer)
Favorite artist: Light & space artist James Turrell. His work is all-encompassing, a complete experience and the colors stay with you.
Number one on my bucket list: A day at Centre Court Wimbledon
