The Sweeney Sisters
Book Review - The Sweeney Sisters by Lian Dolan
Described as, “ written with the wit of Jonathan Tropper and the heart of Susan Wiggs.” I was quick to agree to a review of The Sweeney Sisters by Lian Dolan. I loved Jonathan Tropper’s This is Where I Leave You and I could definitely see the comparison as I read through the novel. I was also excited to read a novel about sisterhood written by a sister-host of the beloved podcast, the Satellite Sisters. Although I never wished for siblings, as an only child I do enjoy reading about close-knit sisters and how they support one another through life’s hardships.
The Sweeney Sisters by Lian Dolan is about a family of sisters dealing with the death of their father, renowned writer Bill Sweeney. They are grieving daughters who have to deal with the mess left behind by their father, including tight financials, a missing memoir promised to his publisher, and a previously unknown daughter their father had with another woman. For so long it was the three of them, they fit into each other’s lives easily: each of their strengths compliments another’s weakness. How will adding in a fourth sister alter this dynamic?
Written from the third-person omniscient perspective allowing us into the thoughts of every character, we get to know each of the sisters and the other characters involved in the story from a variety of perspectives. We see how each character sees themselves as well as how the other characters view them. I don’t often read novels written from this perspective, I think it is difficult to pull off, but Lian Dolan does it beautifully.
