Author of Merely Mortal (Merely Mortal Series Book #1)

A gripping new first-person POV urban fantasy romance series by NY Times and USA Today bestselling author, Michelle M. Pillow.

All I want is a simple, normal life.

Unfortunately, normalcy is a luxury I can’t afford as a lowly human born into a powerful supernatural family embroiled in magic. They’ve always been quick to remind me that I have an expiration date. Imagine everyone’s surprise when it’s me standing above their graves, not the other way around.

The fire that took their lives wasn’t my fault, yet everyone is blaming me, especially the vampires. Now I have a target on my back and a bounty on my head. Without the protection of my family, I’m caught up in a tangled web of supernatural dynasties and arcane power struggles.

So when a handsome stranger and his young daughter take pity on me and offer me a ride, I don’t say no. It’s a mistake. One I hope doesn’t cost us all our lives.

Sometimes, being merely mortal really sucks.

Author I draw inspiration from:

Anne Rice has been a significant influence on my work. Her ability to blend romance, fantasy, and the supernatural seamlessly is something I admire deeply. Rice’s intricate world-building and character development set a standard I strive for in my writing.

"The Vampire Chronicles" series, especially "Interview with the Vampire," captivated me with its rich storytelling and complex characters. The way Rice explores the inner turmoil and existential angst of her vampire characters is both profound and mesmerizing.

Favorite place to read a book:

Curled up on my couch with a cozy blanket and a cup of coffee. There's something magical about being enveloped in comfort while diving into another world. The stillness of the night adds to the immersion, making each page turn feel like an intimate escape.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

Louis de Pointe du Lac from "Interview with the Vampire" by Anne Rice.

I imagine we'd have a deep, philosophical conversation about immortality, morality, and the nature of existence. Louis' reflective nature would make for an enlightening and introspective experience, and I’d be fascinated to hear his thoughts on the human condition from his unique perspective.

Or, he might be hungry, and it won't be much of a conversation.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

I don't know that there was an ah-ha moment. I've always just loved stories. In high school, reading Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" and realizing the power of storytelling to transport and transform readers. Austen's ability to weave intricate social commentary into engaging narratives inspired me to explore my own voice and stories. Plus, that Mr. Darcy...

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

Each format has its unique charm. Hardbacks are timeless and collectible, providing a sense of permanence and elegance. Paperbacks are portable and tactile, perfect for taking on the go. Ebooks are convenient and accessible, allowing you to carry an entire library in your pocket. Audiobooks bring stories to life with narration, adding an extra layer of engagement through the performance of the reader.

I can't pick a favorite.

The last book I read:

"Spellcasting with a Chance of Spirits" by Mandy M. Roth.

I absolutely loved it! Mandy M. Roth's books have a captivating blend of humor, romance, and supernatural intrigue. The characters are richly developed, each bringing their own unique charm and depth to the story. Roth's writing style is engaging and witty, making it easy to get lost in the world she has created. The plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat, and the chemistry between the protagonists was electrifying. It's a must-read for fans of paranormal romance and the gothics.

Pen & paper or computer:

I use both, depending on the stage of my writing process. I often brainstorm and outline with pen and paper, finding the tactile experience helps my creativity flow. Once I have a solid foundation, I switch to the computer for drafting and editing, which allows for faster writing and easier revisions.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

Elizabeth Bennet from "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen.

Elizabeth's wit, intelligence, and strong sense of self resonate with me. Her independence and sharp mind (especially considering the time she lived) would make for lively and stimulating conversations. I think we'd share many laughs and deep discussions about life, love, and everything in between.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

Does it have to be a real-world job? Can I have superpowers or magic?

I honestly can't think of anything I would love doing as much. At one point, I wanted to be a photographer and tell stories with my lens. I supposed I'd do that.

Favorite decade in fashion history:

To study? The medieval period. I wouldn't want to live there, but the fashion and cultural history of that era are incredibly rich and fascinating. The intricate designs and symbolic meanings behind the attire offer a deep well of inspiration for world-building in my writing. I can't say I'd be a fan of actually living in the feudal system, though. And the health care has much to be desired.

Place I’d most like to travel:

I want to see the world. I love cultural anthropology and discovering new cultures, locations, and ways of life. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the ancient ruins of Rome, each place offers a unique perspective and story that can enrich my understanding and creativity.

My signature drink:

A soy vanilla latte. It's my go-to for a comforting and energizing boost, perfect for long writing sessions or a cozy reading day.

Favorite artist:

Vincent van Gogh. His use of color and emotion in his paintings is both inspiring and deeply moving. The intensity and passion in his work resonate with me, reflecting the depth of human experience and emotion that I strive to capture in my writing.

Number one on my bucket list:

I’d love to go on a literary tour of Europe, visiting the homes and haunts of my favorite authors. Exploring the places that inspired great works of literature would be a dream come true and an incredible source of inspiration for my own writing. I'd love to explore the old ruins and castles.

Anything else you'd like to add:

"Merely Mortal" is a special project for me, marking my first foray into first-person POV storytelling. I'm excited for readers to join Tamara on her journey and experience the world through her eyes. Thank you for your support and for giving this new series a chance! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
