Julie Pennell
Author Interview - Julie Pennell
Author of Louisiana Lucky.
Author I draw inspiration from: There are so many, but I particularly love Mary Kay Andrews' witty style of writing and southern settings.
Favorite place to read a book: In a pool lounge chair that overlooks the beach
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. She seems like she'd be cool under the pressure (I'm claustrophobic so I'd be freaking out!)
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: When I was in middle school, I wrote a short story and submitted it to a teen magazine's fiction contest. It won honorable mention and my name was printed in the magazine. I always loved writing stories, but this was the first time I realized other people besides my parents actually liked reading what I wrote.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: All of the above! Right now I'm really into ebooks because I've been reading while holding my newborn in my arms and it's a lot easier to scroll than turn a physical page. I also enjoy audio books because I can sneak in some reading when I go for walks. But nothing compares to the smell and feel of an actual book.
The last book I read: Kristy Woodson Harvey's "Feels Like Falling." So, so good!
Pen & paper or computer: Computer!
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Little Women's Jo March
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: Interior designer. I could look at pretty houses all day long.
Favorite decade in fashion history: 90s! I was a teen during that time and totally embraced the trends (animal print, butterfly clips, mini backpacks). While I don't think it's the coolest decade for fashion, I'm nostalgic for it.
Place I’d most like to travel: I still haven't been to Turks and Caicos, and a tropical vacation sounds pretty amazing right now.
My signature drink: If I have a cocktail, it's usually a gin and tonic with two limes. But wine is usually my go-to.
Favorite artist: My two year old. His scribbles show real depth and speak to my soul :)
Number one on my bucket list: I think this is probably on every author's bucket list, but I'd love one of my books to be on The New York Times Best Seller list in my lifetime.
