Louisiana Lucky
Book Review - Louisiana Lucky by Julie Pennell
Have you ever sat around a dinner table with family or friends and mused over what you would do if you won the lottery? It is a holiday tradition in my family to get scratcher tickets or lottery tickets in our stockings, so we’ve often discussed how much we’d want to win, how much we’d spend right away as a treat and how much we’d put away into savings and investments. So when I heard that Louisiana Lucky by Julie Pennell had three sisters winning the lottery, I was excited to see what they did with the money.
Louisiana Lucky by Julie Pennell is about sisters Lexi, Callie, and Hanna Breaux, who get together each month for a sister’s night to play the lottery. Each month they get two tickets with random numbers and one ticket with meaningful numbers. It is really just a night to have fun with each other and catch up, they never actually thought they’d win….until they won. And they won BIG. $204 million dollars big. But as the saying goes, more money, more problems. You can imagine what kind of challenges they face after such a significant life change.
This was such a charming book to read. The sisters felt really authentic to me, even going so far as to annoy me at times (as the best of friends do) but they were really endearing as well. They tackle totally normal problems such as feeling inadequate, feeling ostracized, low self-esteem, and losing yourself in the midst of big life changes. It had a sweet ending for those who want a happy ending, but not too cliché either. Plus, it gives us all a chance to learn from their mistakes so that when we win the lottery, we’ll do it better. :) Ha!
