The Inspiration

In addition to Mood Boards, Devon of Devon Grace Interiors also does these great flat lays where she compiles the materials (or material options) to be used in a project and artfully arranges them on a flat surface. I love how they give you a visual of what all of the materials will look like together. One of my concerns about not hiring a professional interior designer was making sure everything was cohesive. So to put my mind at ease, I decided I’d create a flat lay. Come to find out…they are kind of hard to make! I messaged Devon about this on Instagram and she replied, “There’s a reason I don’t do them very often, lol.” I probably should have talked to her about making one before I started, but I was too invested by the time we talked, so I had to finish. Here’s the result:

I think of my style as mid-century modern meets Scandinavian simplicity, with a sprinkling of art deco. I like clean lines, bright whites accented by moody blacks, with shades of gray to soften the two extremes. The warm wood tones really draw from that mid-century aesthetic as well as the Hygge idea of bringing natural materials into the home. And of course, if you’ve been following me on Instagram, you know I’ve recently become mildly obsessed with house plants…so I had to include a nod to that part of the home in my flat lay.

Material sources: Large format tile. Hexagon tile. Gray fabric. Off-white fabric. Countertop. Paint option one. Paint option two. Paint option three. Cabinet material. Wood flooring. Cabinet pulls.
