Book Review - Rich People Problems
The final book in Kevin Kwan's Crazy Rich Asians Series, Rich People Problems, was my favorite of the three! (Did you miss by reviews of the first two books in this series? Check out my review of Crazy Rich Asians and China Rich Girlfriend.) This book focused less on Rachel and Nick (the two main characters in the first two books) and more on their extended family. We met most of the extended family in the first two books but Rich People Problems delved deeper into the family as a whole.
In Rich People Problems, the main plot line is about Tyersall Park, the house where Nick's grandmother lives. It is worth billions but to Nick and a few of his closest family members, it is priceless. What will happen to Tyersall Park after his grandma passes away? I loved this story line because I love historic architecture and especially house museums. Tyersall Park has a rich history beyond Nick's family, dating back to WWII. Which brings me to another reason why I loved this book - the talk about the war. I love historical fiction novels about WWII (as you know, I wrote my dissertation on WWII war brides.) I hadn't expected this book to talk about the war, but it offered a small but very unique perspective on the war.
If you loved the descriptions of the glamorous lives of the rich and famous in the first two books, you won't be disappointed in this one. There was plenty of talk about luxury fashion designers, private jets, and other things that people spend their money on when they have too much of it. Plus, I think we can all agree that Astrid is our favorite character (the most glamorous and the most down to earth - I mean, it is a killer combination) this book focuses a lot more on her than the previous two books.
I am very hesitant to read a series - I hate committing to more than one book. But this series was totally worth it. I had so much fun reading these books and I'm sad there isn't another one coming out (or is there??) I'd love to hear how Nick's mom reacts to the big news Nick and Rachel shared at the very end of this book...
