The Unfortunate Importance of Beauty
Book Review - The Unfortunate Importance of Beauty by Amanda Filipacchi
You win some...you lose some. Although the message in this book was strong, I just couldn't get over the writing style and the fantasy aspects. Ultimately, the author lost me with this book. Part of me thinks if I had known it was a fantasy book going into it I would have been more open to it or at least bracing for it. But I went in blind and quickly found myself confused. To the author's credit (and fair warning to anyone who uses my reviews to decide whether or not to read a book) fantasy is NOT my favorite genre. So if fantasy is your thing...please take this review with a grain of salt.
At the heart of the story are two women: Barb is unarguably a gorgeous woman who intentionally makes herself ugly by wearing a costume that disguises her beauty in hopes that she will find someone who loves her regardless of the way she looks. Lily, on the other hand, is a plain looking but extremely talented musician who uses her music to make the man who has rejected her fall in love with her. Barb and Lily are members of an artistic group in NYC and they just discovered there may be a murderer among them.
