Book Review - The Paris Secret by Natasha Lester

The opening scene of The Paris Secret by Natasha Lester is the debut of Christian Dior’s New Look collection. So, obviously, I was HOOKED. As a fashion historian, I’m very familiar with The New Look. We cover that part of fashion history extensively, but I’d never imagined it in my head or what it would be like to actually be there. It was more something to study and analyze and reflect on the impact it made on the fashion world at the time. So when I realized what I was “witnessing” in Natasha Lester’s first chapter…I was transported.

The Paris Secret by Natasha Lester focuses on Skye Penrose and her sister Liberty. In this triple timeline novel, which bounces from 1939 to 1947 to the present day, we discover how two identical Christian Dior gowns tie together two women and unveil their wartime secrets. Our protagonist, Skye, is a pilot during WWII who reunites with her childhood best friend only to discover he is engaged to another woman. In the present day, we meet Kat Jourdan, a fashion conservator (swoon!), who discovers two unknown Christian Dior gowns at the same time she is contacted by a writer who thinks her grandmother might be WWII spy Margaux Jourdan.

Book Review - The Paris Secret by Natasha Lester

You guys, I was in historical fiction heaven reading this book. The fashion was to DIE for. It also provided some relief from the rather graphic details of some of the worst WWII tragedies. This novel showcased the best and worst of WWII. The best: strong women doing their part to help the war effort and, of course, the fashion. The worst: The sacrifices people made to survive, the life and death decisions, and what the Nazi’s did to millions of people. Ravensbrück.
