Everybody (Else) is Perfect
Book Feature - Everybody (Else) is Perfect by Gabrielle Korn
HBL Note: In a previous life, when I taught fashion courses at Indiana University, I used to facilitate a student reading group. Each semester I would pick a select group of students to meet weekly to discuss two books (usually somewhat related to the fashion industry.) If I still facilitated that reading group, I definitely would have selected this book as one of my selections for the semester. It is written by Gabrielle Korn, the former editor-in-chief of Nylon and former fashion director of Refinery29 - my students would have LOVED reading this book and discussing her take on the fashion industry. Everybody (Else) is Perfect: How I Survived Hypocrisy, Beauty, Clicks, and Likes by Gabrielle Korn, the former editor-in-chief of Nylon and former fashion director of Refinery29. Already hailed a “biting, clever, personal narrative” by Harper’s Bazaar and “The Devil Wears Prada meets Jia Tolentino’s Trick Mirror” by OprahMag.com, Everybody (Else) is Perfect is a provocative and intimate collection of personal and cultural essays featuring eye-opening explorations of issues for modern women.
In this inspirational and searing collection, Gabrielle reveals what it’s truly like in the fashion world, trying to find love as a young lesbian in New York City, battling with anorexia, and trying not to lose herself in a mirage of women’s empowerment and Instagram perfection. From #MeToo to commercialized body positivity, Korn’s biting, darkly funny analysis turns feminist commentary on its head—perfect for fans of Roxane Gay and Rebecca Solnit.
