Author Interview - Kate Bromley

Author of Talk Bookish To Me

Kara Sullivan is a bestselling romance novelist and bookstagrammer who has been battling writer’s block for almost a year. With the deadline for her next novel looming and her best friend’s wedding days away, the last thing she needs is for her infuriating first love, Ryan Thompson, to suddenly appear in the wedding party. But Ryan’s unexpected arrival sparks a creative awakening in Kara that inspires the steamy historical romance she desperately needs to deliver. Knowing there’s only one way to give her characters the ever-after they deserve, Kara must decide if she can embrace her unlikely, ruggedly handsome muse—who pushes every one of her buttons—to save the wedding, her career and, just maybe, write her own happy ending.

Author I draw inspiration from: Sally Thorne. I absolutely love her writing style, her dialogue, and the chemistry between her characters is always through the roof. Whenever I think of rom-com author goals, she’s the first person that comes to mind.

Favorite place to read a book: Can I choose the library from Beauty and the Beast as my ideal reading spot? If yes, then there but with a super comfy chair and a hot cup of tea. If not, I’d happily settle for my couch, also with tea.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Heathcliff! I read Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte every few years, so I have a million questions I’d like to ask. Though, given the fact that he’s not always the friendliest character, if he’d rather sit on the floor and silently brood for our elevator experience, I’d totally be there for that as well.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I think I just read such an intense amount of romance novels that I wondered if I could become an author by some kind of literary osmosis. I also knew I wanted to write a romance that made my readers laugh (in a good way) and quickly realized that rom-coms were exactly that. Then, it was off to the races!

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Paperbacks for me. I like holding a physical copy of a book and they’re light enough that I can easily keep one stashed in my bag or backpack (mom-life fun fact, having a toddler means you will almost always trek around with a freight train sized backpack at all times).

The last book I read: Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal. I cannot get enough of Jane Austen/Pride and Prejudice retellings, and this novel was absolutely amazing.

Pen & paper or computer: Pen and paper for outlining, notes, and character breakdowns. Computer for writing the actual love stories.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice! (I may or may not be a Jane Austen superfan.) I would be so psyched to be Lizzy’s sidekick, and I can fully imagine her, me, and Charlotte Lucas having an awesome time together at the Netherfield ball.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: I’d go back to being a teacher. Before I started writing full-time, I was a preschool teacher for nearly seven years and there are still moments when I definitely miss it.

Favorite decade in fashion history: This was such a hard question for me! I’m far from a fashionista and basically just wear comfy clothes all day, every day…so maybe I’ll go with the 80’s because they seem the most comfortable?

Place I’d most like to travel: I’d love to go to Ireland. The Cliffs of Moher seem particularly dreamy and very romance novel-esque, so that’s an automatic ‘yes’ for me.

My signature drink: For going out and feeling fancy, probably a Bay Breeze (same as my main character). And for staying in, I love a nice cup of tea.

Favorite artist: My mom had a few framed Monet prints in the house where I grew up, so I’ll go with Monet since his work reminds me of home.

Number one on my bucket list: I’d really like to see the Grand Canyon someday. I don’t do super well in the heat, but I would tough it for that one visit.

Anything else you'd like to add: Just a quick thank you! This interview was a blast!

Author Bio: Kate Bromley is a writer of romantic comedies and contemporary romance. She lives in New York City with her husband, son, and her somewhat excessive collection of romance novels. (It's not hoarding if it's books, right?) She was a preschool teacher for almost seven years and now focuses full-time on combining her two great passions — writing swoon-worthy love stories and making people laugh.
