Author Interview - Jayne Cowie
Author of Curfew
Think The Handmaid's Tale but with the women in charge, set in a world where all men are electronically tagged and placed under strict curfew, and the murder investigation threatening to undo it all.
Favorite place to read a book: I read wherever and whenever, but my favourite reading space (and time) is when I’m sat in my car waiting for my kids to come out of school and I have that quiet fifteen-minute window when there are no other demands on my time (I’ve been known to go early if the book I’m reading is particularly good).
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Eve Dallas from the In Death series (J.D. Robb) because she could get us both out of there with minimal delay.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: From the first moment that I understood it was a job, so probably the age of five or six. I was a voracious reader and had a very vivid imagination – I believed that my toys came alive when I left the room and often saw fairies in the garden, so the idea that I could live in my imaginary worlds and get paid for it seemed fantastic.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: I’m an ebook fan. It’s easier to hide your enormous pile of unread books from your husband that way.
The last book I read: I just finished reading Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell, which was a twisty, fascinating book about the mother of a missing girl.
Pen & paper or computer: Computer, definitely! I use a pen and paper to scribble on as I’m writing, but the vast majority of the work is done on my laptop.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: I think I would get on well with Stephanie Plum from One for the Money by Janet Evanovich, because she often makes a mess of things. And she likes to eat.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: emotional wreck
Favorite decade in fashion history: It has to be the 80’s, for the brightly coloured shoes and the puffball skirts, all of which I was too young to wear. Sadly I came of age in the 90’s, a time of combat trousers and Dr Marten boots. I’m still sore about it.
Place I’d most like to travel: I’d love to go to Japan, because it’s so different to the UK in all respects, and I think it would be fascinating to experience a culture that is nothing like my own.
My signature drink: Pumpkin spice latte
Favorite artist: I’ve got quite a few, but I am drawn to the works of William Blake. He was incredibly prolific, and there’s something magical about his illustrated poems and stories, many of which are tiny and beautiful in their detail.
Number one on my bucket list: a tidy house. I’ve never had one. Maybe one day.
