My name is Lila, and I am a junior cover designer at the Berkley imprint at Penguin Random House. Originally from Massachusetts, I have called Brooklyn home since 2019. Inspiration for The Spice Master at Bistro Exotique by Samantha Vérant:
I had a wonderful art director in Katie Anderson, whose guidance was extremely helpful in designing this cover. Our goal was to create something whimsical, romantic, and of course, French! When illustrating the actual bistro and the other buildings on the cover, I drew inspiration from Parisian streets and architecture. The sloped gray roofs and limestone exteriors are just two of the classic elements that make Paris so recognizable and unique. And, naturally, the skyline on this cover wouldn't feel complete without the Eiffel Tower! In college I studied abroad in Paris for a semester, and when I saw the Eiffel Tower in person, I was surprised to find I felt almost star-struck. It truly is just so iconic and elegant (and really fun to draw!). As a reader, I love when a book cover includes small details from the story, which is why I incorporated the hummingbird, the green awning, and the smoke bubble drink on the table, all fun elements I hope readers of the book will appreciate!
