Whiskey Sours Without Sugar? No Problem!

A Guest Post by Helen Hardt

My husband and I are bourbon drinkers. He used to be a scotch drinker, and though I prefer wine, we both love a good bourbon. While I enjoy my share of premium bourbons, my old standby—and preferred mixer—is Wild Turkey.

Wild Turkey also happens to be the favorite of Braden Black—the dark and sexy hero in my new release, Follow Me Darkly. Braden, of course, drinks his Wild Turkey neat. With its smoky vanilla and oak and light toffee finish, this bourbon is lovely by itself. But it also makes a wonderful mixer for cocktails.

When I was young, my go-to cocktail was a whiskey sour. I have fond memories of visiting my grandparents and uncle in Colorado during the summers. My uncle mixed up blenders full of whiskey sours and served my sister and me tiny portions in cordial glasses. I continued to enjoy a whiskey sour as an adult, until I decided to eliminate a lot of the sugar in my diet. I’m the daughter and granddaughter of Type 2 diabetics, and I suffered from gestational diabetes during one of my pregnancies, so I carry a high risk of developing the disease. Plus, some studies suggest that sugar is more addictive than cocaine. Time to cut down my intake! Did that mean I had to give up my beloved whiskey sours?

Yes, when dining out. But not at home! I adapted my favorite recipe for the low carb lifestyle, which I’ve followed for the last several years. It’s super easy to make and absolutely delicious as a weekend cocktail.

Helen’s Low Carb Wild Turkey Whiskey Sour

  • 1 shot Wild Turkey bourbon

  • 1 shot lemon juice

  • 1 shot water

  • 1 packet Truvia

Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously. Strain into a lowball glass over ice cubes and enjoy!

I’ve always been a control freak. But he makes me crave submission…

Working for a hotel heiress and social media influencer may not be my dream job, but at least it allows me time to do what I really love—take photographs. Pretty good for a wholesome farm girl from Kansas trying to make it in Boston. Life may not be easy working for a diva, but at least I know what to expect.

Until blue-collar billionaire Braden Black strides into the office. He’s beyond handsome and sexy, but also domineering with a definite hard edge. I’m not sure why he’s interested in me, but within a few weeks, he’s showing me a world I never knew existed.

He’s opened up a side of me I can only face in the dark, and it’s quickly becoming an obsession. How can I give up something this addictive—even if his secrets could ultimately destroy me?
