Family Photos in Cabo with Fer de la Rosa

I’d been following Fernanda of Fer de la Rosa Photography on Instagram for years. I loved her bright, cheerful, romantic style and the way she captured the beauty of Mexico. I was just waiting for the right time to hire her for family photos and my son’s first visit to Cabo seemed like the right time. When I tell you this day was pure chaos, I mean it. Miles skipped a nap and was running on pure adrenaline. He was tired of being contained, whether in his stroller or being held, he was OVER it. But he also wasn’t walking much at the time (that came a few days later…yes, my son learned to walk in Cabo!) It was hot, everyone was sweating, and my shoes gave me blisters so I ended up buying new ones 20 minutes before these photos were taken. (Click here for my guide on local shopping in Los Cabos.) When our session ended, I had very little hope that we’d have usable photos. But Fernanda performed a miracle and produced some of our favorite family photos to date. Scroll down to get to know Fernanda a bit better and to see some of my favorite photos she took during our session together.

Hiring a professional photographer to capture family photos on vacation can offer several benefits:

  1. High-Quality Photos: Professional photographers have the expertise, equipment, and artistic vision to capture stunning images. They understand lighting, composition, and angles, resulting in photos that stand out in terms of quality and aesthetics.

  2. Memorable Moments: Vacations are special occasions that create lasting memories. A professional photographer can capture these moments in a way that candid snapshots may not, preserving the essence and emotion of the experience for years to come.

  3. Everyone Can Be in the Photos: When you rely on a professional photographer, everyone in the family can be included in the photos. Instead of one family member being designated as the photographer, everyone can participate fully in the vacation experience.

  4. Local Expertise: Many professional photographers are locals or have extensive knowledge of the vacation destination. They can recommend picturesque locations, offer insights into the best times for photography, and provide guidance on posing and styling.

  5. Customized Experience: Professional photographers often offer customized photo sessions tailored to the preferences and needs of the family. Whether you want candid shots, posed portraits, or a mix of both, they can accommodate your desires and create a personalized photo album that reflects your family's unique dynamics.

  6. Less Stress: Hiring a professional photographer allows you to relax and enjoy your vacation without worrying about capturing the perfect shot. Instead of constantly fiddling with your camera or smartphone, you can focus on creating memories with your loved ones while the photographer takes care of documenting the experience.

  7. Professional Editing: After the photo session, professional photographers typically provide editing services to enhance the images further. This may include color correction, retouching, and cropping to ensure that the final photos look polished and professional.

Overall, investing in a professional photographer for family photos on vacation can elevate the quality of your images, enhance your overall experience, and provide you with cherished memories that you'll treasure for years to come.

About Fernanda de la Rosa:

My name is Fernanda de la Rosa, I am a Lifestyle & Wedding Photographer in Cabo San Lucas.

I picked up the camera and for the past nine years I've let photography be my passion. I could define myself as an adventurous nomad, always in search of free spirits, of stories that generate connections through laughter, color and the most beautiful sceneries.

If you would find my name in a dictionary, for sure the words playful, colorful and fun would be the first to appear as part of my definition. The camera has allowed me to connect with wonderful people and now I use my passion to tell stories, laugh and enjoy my passion.

How did you get into photography?

I had my first photography lesson probably when I was 10 years old, my dad explain me how to use his camera a Pentax X1000 ( I still use that camera on special occasions) Then on my "Quinceañera" my parents gave me money to buy anything that I wanted, so I got my first Digital Camera Canon. Eventually after college I moved to Cancun and Cabo, I wasn't able to find work based on my previous experience as concierge or front desk, and someone gave me the opportunity to start as a photographer 13 years ago, I worked with this company as a manager for 5 years and one day I just decided to try on my own, after that, nothing but great experiences and amazing adventures.

How would you describe your photography aesthetic/style?

I think photography is a reflection of the personality of the person behind the camera, I consider my style very joyful, full of emotions, always trying to capture and bring big smiles into the frame, I like to show people that a photoshoot, does not have to be a painful experience, I like to create a memorable experience beyond the images. Also I really try to incorporate the landscape or city as a part of the story.

What are your favorite people/things/events to photograph?

I love Weddings! (Thank you Julia Roberts for My Best Friend's Wedding and JLo with the Wedding Planner) But I feel more comfortable capturing  "LOVE"  any expressions of love, that's what I like to capture!, the love for the kids from the moms, love for the grandchild, secret proposals. I think I'm the biggest fan of any human interaction, I had the opportunity of doing commercial and real estate Photography, but what really keeps me creative and inspired is that energy of getting to know more people.

What are you doing when you aren't taking photographs?

When I am not taking photos I do spend a lot of time with my daughter Valentina and our new puppy Chente. I am a very social person, I like to see my friends a few times a week. Now I'm working on a photography workshop, one of my goals is to Teach Photography for Kids, and help them to see beyond and express themselves with the help of a camera.

Do you like to read? (Either adult books or to your kids?) What's one of your favorite books?

I wish I could read more, but when a book caughts my attention I forget there is a world outside. The last book I read was "La Cabeza de mi Padre" Alma Delia Murillo. One book I have always close to me is "Mujeres de Ojos Grandes" / Women with big Eyes  Easy book with short stories of powerful, loving and brave  women during the Mexican Revolution. And Elizabeth Gilbert's "Big Magic" when I am creative burned out

Also I have a big collection of Books for kids, I love how some authors can explain very complex themes in a very easy  and simple way. I started getting them and reading to Valentina, but eventually I was the one reading over and over. Like SADNESS: a User's Manual.

Don’t forget to take couples photos!

Parents should consider taking couples photos without their kids during a family photo session to prioritize and celebrate their relationship as a couple. Amidst the busy and demanding responsibilities of parenthood, it's easy for couples to lose sight of their bond and connection. Capturing moments of just the two of them allows parents to reminisce about their journey together and reaffirm their love and commitment. These photos serve as a timeless reminder of the foundation upon which their family is built and the importance of nurturing their relationship. Additionally, having couples photos without kids provides an opportunity for parents to reconnect, enjoy each other's company, and create cherished memories that are solely focused on their partnership. In essence, these images serve as a testament to the strength and vitality of their relationship, enriching the overall family photo collection with moments of intimacy and love between partners.
