How did you prepare to narrate The Lighthouse by Christopher Parker?

How I prepared for the performance of this book was similar to other fiction and yet as unique as each and every book is, with its own world and characters and themes.

The first time I read the text I know I have the same opportunity to wonder as the reader and listener, so I pay attention to the “what happens next?” questions… what am I wanting to know? Being aware of that helps to keep me in the moment of the experience for the performance because – even though I know the whole arc -- the characters and the listener alike are both exploring together.

Tone is one of the most important things to seek from the author’s intent when narrating because it’s so integral to the vocal focus and delivery.  I look for what is most active, how badly the characters need what they’re seeking and let them be my guides, my director. Some of their voices jump off of the page and some take a while to reveal themselves.

The way that Christopher Parker writes and the world that he created, I was immediately involved with the characters, and I cared about each of them. It was easy to become swept up in their journeys and the mysterious happenings. I love the cover art and that also gave me a cinematic setting and feeling to launch into the story. I was delighted that Christopher devised a clever Prologue to help set the mood – I think it’s an awesome way to bring everyone into the intention with a “let me tell you a story” opener. I had read the script a while before I could start recording and I noticed with this book, more than most any other project, that I was drawn to want to get into the booth… it felt like the characters were impatient to have voice and for their journey to happen and be told.  That haunting nudge was intriguing to me and certainly indicative of the personal and special connection I felt with every one of them. It’s a special project to me and I’m excited that listeners and readers will get to enjoy Christopher’s characters now, too.

More books narrated by Braden Wright:

(gosh… in similar genres?)

Most popular include the Seth books by Jane Roberts – me, the voice of Seth.

Here are three … I tried not to go too far afield from “The Lighthouse” but they aren’t exact sub-genres matches because I do work all over the map.

  • Abducted: Escape from Kraile, by J.R. Cleveland – a fun YA Sci-Fi abduction adventure

  • The Great Awakening, by Chaise Allen Crosby--anti-factory farm novel, great animal characters

  • SIMS, by F Paul Wilson-- Sci-Fi thriller
