25 Authors and Their Favorite Musicians

“Who is your favorite artist?” is a question I ask every author I interview for this blog. I intentionally leave the question vague and open-ended to see what first comes to mind for each individual author. Some authors choose visual artists, some choose other authors, and some choose musicians. Here are 25 Authors who chose musicians as their favorite artists. Do your favorite authors share your favorite musicians?

Helena Hunting

Music? Narrowing that down to Echos, NF, Illenium, Tate McRae

Gabriella Saab

Singer? Sara Bareilles.

Farhad J. Dadyburjor

Madonna. Her ‘art’, her music, has always spoken out against prejudices, homophobia, gender stereotyping and the numerous things that society expects you to conform to. For a gay kid growing up in the 90s in Mumbai pre-internet times, hers was the loudest (and only) voice about self-love and self-acceptance.

Colleen van Niekerk

Prince. I don't listen to his music as often as I used to, but his songs always have that quality of making me feel like I'm coming home.

Liam Fialkov

The Beatles. I grew up listening to their music, and it still moves and impresses me.

Catherine Dang

Prince, because his music's been there with me since childhood, and he's a fellow Minnesotan. I also adore Lorde and SZA--their respective Melodrama and Ctrl albums never get old. I still get weepy listening to them.

Paityn E. Parque

Twenty One Pilots

Alison Cochrun

Assuming the term artist is being used in the broadest sense here, my favorite artist is unapologetically Taylor Swift. When I'm drafting, I often think about the vibes of a book in terms of which Taylor Swift album it is. (The Charm Offensive is definitely Speak Now and my next book is Evermore.)

Cristina Morató

Lady Gaga, a really strong woman

Shae Bryant

When I hear "artist", my mind immediately goes to "music artist". I'll answer with that. My all-time favorite band is Blind Guardian, followed closely by Sabaton and Serenity.

Lynn Slaughter

Musically- love the American Songbook- Cole Porter, etc. And I adore Ella Fitzgerald as a singer.

Lyn Liao Butler

I'm going to go with favorite recording artist since I don't have a favorite fine artist. My favorite songs are Viva la Vida by Cold Play, and Human by The Killers. There's something about both songs that makes me happy whenever I hear them. I could have the two songs on repeat all day long and feel my mood lift.

Victoria Christopher Murray

Michael Jackson...a musical genius.

Bridget Morrissey

I’m interpreting this as musical artist, to which I once again balk at choosing a singular favorite! I love to love widely! It’s all so mood dependent, but some evergreen favorites of mine include (but are not limited to): Laura Marling, Tori Amos, Simon & Garfunkel, Fiona Apple, Phoebe Bridgers, Mitski, Sufjan Stevens, Eryn Allen Kane, Fleetwood Mac, Usher, Something Corporate, and literally every single R&B song that played on Chicago’s B96 radio station in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s.

Casey Dembowski

Musical? Andrew McMahon in any iteration, but especially Jacks' Mannequin.

Susan J. Farese

Bruce Springsteen

Nancy Star

musical hero: Joni Mitchell

Gin Phillips

That's highly changeable. I'm in a Bruce Springsteen phase at the moment. The week before it was Big Mama Thornton.

Kaira Rouda

Music? Dylan Rouda, my son, who is a singer/songwriter, and just released his first EP

Elle Marr

Lady Gaga; I think her talent, style, and exuberance for life in general is amazing.

Denny S. Bryce

Musical artist is jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald.

Lauren Edmondson

Oh, this is lovely question. Jane Austen. Henry James. Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Sally Mann. Jackson Pollack. Dan Levy. Amanda Gorman. Interior designer Mark Sikes. Taylor Swift. Tyler, The Creator. Amy Poehler and Tiny Fey. Shonda Rhimes. Comedian Heather McMahan. Andy Cohen (he counts, yes?).

Tracy Dobmeier & Wendy Katzman

Tracy: Queen
(Wendy: Rodin)

Naima Simone

Imagine Dragons

Patricia Davids

J.J. Cole for music
