If I could dream up a job for myself, it would be to work for a little old lady who has more money than she knows what to do with and a house full of treasures that she needs to be organized, documented and put on display. She would pay me to come to her beautiful home (albeit a bit cluttered) and turn it into a museum or catalog her items to be donated to special collections. This woman would have fascinating stories to tell and would make me sweet little cakes while I worked. We would end each night with a glass of wine and she’d ask me about my weekend plans. Is that too much to ask for? Do you think a little old lady is sitting in such home now, reading this blog post and saying ‘aha! I found my girl!’ One can hope…

Rosalyn Acosta, the main character in The Vineyards of Champagne by Juliet Blackwell, meets a woman on a plane to Champagne who essentially offers her a version of the job I described above. She has a stack of letters from a WWI soldier and she is seeking to find descendants of the soldier and hopes to find the other half of the correspondence. But Rosalyn is traveling to Champagne for work, a job she is neither very good at nor enjoys all that much. She is tempted by the offer but feels as if she owes her boss for helping her when she was struggling to get back on her feet.

My husband and I had dinner with author Stacey Ballis and her husband last weekend, and while we were there we learned SO much about wine. We were particularly fascinated by the subject of biodynamic wine, a concept I hadn’t heard of before. So imagine my delight when I read more about it in this novel! I love how this book was chock-full of information about wine (primarily champagne) as well as what life was like in France during WWI. I adored many of the characters in this book and was sad to say goodbye to them when I finished the novel. I think you’ll enjoy this one, too.
