Author Interview - Juliet Blackwell
Author I draw inspiration from: There are so many! Elizabeth Peters, Barbara Kingsolver, Zadie Smith
Favorite place to read a book: A big comfy chair by the window, or the fireplace
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Harriet the Spy
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I’ve loved stories my whole life, reading and writing a few. But I didn’t take it seriously until I was in my late thirties, when I was working as a decorative painter in San Francisco. My sister and I used to trade books back and forth, and she was on a mystery kick. In the middle of the night I was working in an unoccupied mansion in Pacific Heights and wondered to myself why no one had written about someone doing my job
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Hardback, definitely, when I have the choice. The cost can be prohibitive, however, in which case I choose paperback. I listen to audiobooks when I paint or garden
The last book I read: Sarah’s Key
Pen & paper or computer: Copious notes/ideas/charts I do with pen and paper; all serious writing is done by computer
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: Painter or art restorer
Favorite decade in fashion history: To tell the truth, now! The freedom to wear comfortable clothes that allow women to move is a fairly modern phenomenon. When it comes to beauty, however, I favor the beaded, feathered creations from the 1920s flapper era.
Place I’d most like to travel: I am SO lucky in that I spend a lot of time in Europe, mostly France and Spain. But I’ve been wanting to go to Japan to do some research
My signature drink: Boulevardier (basically a Negroni made with whiskey in place of gin)
Favorite artist: Caravaggio
