I can’t remember how I heard about this book or what about it prompted me to seek a copy (probably that gorgeous cover!) but I am thrilled that I read this book. I learned so much! If I had known the story centered on the publication of a book I hadn’t read which was later turned into a movie I never watched, I’m not sure I would have agreed to read it. And that would have been my loss. Chances are if you crossed my path the week I was reading this book, you got an earful about Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.

I had no idea this love story was also so politically charged. The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott is a work of historical fiction about the controversy surrounding the publication of Doctor Zhivago. The author, a native Russian, was criticized for the book being anti-Soviet. The Italians got a hold of the manuscript and published the book in Italian. It was later secretly distributed in the Soviet Union until Pasternak was award the Nobel Prize in Literature. As you can imagine, that did not go over well in his homeland.

I really enjoyed this book. Like I mentioned before, I learned so much! Who knew that a book, known for being a love story, was used as a political weapon by Italy, the United States, and the Soviet Union? I am not surprised in the least that this book was chosen as a BookExpo Buzz Pick. Not only is there one plot centered around the publication of Doctor Zhivago, there is a second plot about espionage and love affairs. I can’t wait for you all to read this book.
