The Other Mrs.
Book Review - The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica
The Other Mrs. is the second book I’ve read and reviewed by Mary Kubica. Last September I reviewed When The Lights Go Out, which is when I learned Mary lives in Chicago. When I read When The Lights Go Out, I was living in St. Louis so I particularly enjoyed the Chicago connection and reading about places I remembered from when I lived there. Now that I’m back in Chicago, I still enjoyed the little shoutouts to Chicago in her latest novel, The Other Mrs.
The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica is about Sadie and Will Foust who move from Chicago to an island off the coast of Maine after inheriting a house from Will’s sister following her death. They also gain custody of Will’s niece, Imogen. Shortly after moving to the island, however, their neighbor is gruesomely murdered. Suspicions surround the new family when Sadie is accused of having a heated argument with the victim and Will is caught in a photograph looking overly familiar with the victim.
I can’t remember if this is true in the other books I’ve read by Mary Kubica, but I was struck by the lack of dialogue in this book. A good 90% of the book has to just be the internal monologue of the characters. There is maybe a couple of sentences of conversation between characters per 2 or 3 pages. It is fascinating to me that Mary Kubica can create such a compelling story by just sharing the thoughts of the characters. I enjoyed reading this book and was a little surprised at the end (I anticipated one twist but hadn’t expected the other!)
