The Lemon Sisters
Book Review - The Lemon Sisters by Jill Shalvis
In December of 2018 I got an email from a publicist I work with closely that included a list of books I should consider for 2019, included in that list was The Lemon Sisters by Jill Shalvis with a note that said (I highly recommend this one!!!) The three exclamation points were included, I didn’t exaggerate that. So how could I pass on that kind of recommendation? I was especially intrigued because it wasn’t a genre I typically pick up and I enjoy reading books that are outside my comfort zone every once in a while (there are so many historical fiction books you can read in a row…) Plus, I was excited to read a Jill Shalvis novel. She’s written quite a number of books prior to The Lemon Sisters, but I had never gotten around to reading any of them.
Six months later, the book is finally here! The Lemon Sisters is about Brooke and Mindy Lemon, sisters who couldn’t be more different from one another. Brooke is spontaneous and adventurous, while Mindy is a type-A organizer who stayed in her hometown to raise a family. Over the past seven years, they’d grown apart and barely spoken until one day, out of the blue, Mindy shows up on Brooke’s doorstep looking (uncharacteristically) a hot mess. Brooke agrees to take Mindy’s kids while Mindy takes some time to herself to relax and refocus. But heading back to her hometown is difficult, she has her family and old friend to see and secrets from her past she may not be ready to face.
This is the epitome of a beach vacation read. It is a quick read with a happy ending that satisfies all those beach vacation cravings: hot guy, beautiful girl, fun career, quirky best friends, cute kids. This book also touched on some real-life tough issues such as the struggle of dealing with OCD, PTSD, alcoholism, and homelessness. The characters were multi-dimensional and complex, I really liked something about all of the main characters…none of them were too good to be true or pure evil. So overall I enjoyed the book, it will definitely satisfied that urge for a sweet romance while sitting by the pool.
