Book Jacket Designs by Caitlin Sacks
Love a Book By Its Cover - Book Jacket Designs by Caitlin Sacks:
I was just hired as the Senior Designer at Grand Central Publishing and in September I’m about to make a cross country move to the east coast with my two cats and the most supportive boyfriend/partner in the world! My journey to becoming a book designer is long-winded. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, where I have continued to live throughout my adult life. I graduated from the University of Redlands with a B.A. in Race and Ethnic Studies and a minor in Studio Art. From there I took on many different professions as a freelancer: Cake Decorator, Food Stylist, Events Decorator, Set Decorator and Wardrobe Stylist for television. Then one day I was browsing jobs on Craigslist and came across an internship with a non-profit indie press located in Pasadena, CA: Red Hen Press. That’s where I fell in love with designing covers and found my true passion. After a few months, my internship turned into a Lead Designer position. It’s been 3 and half years since then, and now I’m starting my dream career and could not be more grateful for all the opportunities that led me to this moment. When I’m not working, you can find me browsing dumb videos on the internet, cuddling my many cats and binge-watching tv. Also pretend I added hiking or something to that last part to make it seem like I’m more active!
Inspiration for Animal Wife by Lara Ehrlich:
My favorite cover is Animal Wife by Lara Ehrlich. The original idea for this cover was much more serene featuring a swan, inspired by her title story, but it was totally the wrong vibe for this. We decided the look should be something passionate and raw, like a beast awakening within a house-wife. That’s when I came up with the current cover. Fun fact: It won Electric Literature’s Best Cover of 2020.
