Author Interview - Meg Mitchell Moore

Author of The Islanders and Two Truths and a Lie

Author I draw inspiration from: There are so many! It’s hard to pick just one. But if I have to I will say Elin Hilderbrand. Not only have I loved every single one of her (many) books but I love how generous she is with her time both for her (many!) fans and other authors as well. Few authors who have reached her level bother to make time for blurbing books or promoting other writers. And very few can publish so often and keep getting better with each one.

(Here’s my shortlist of others if there’s room for more! Lily King, Ann Patchett, Elizabeth Strout, Alice Munro, John Green)

Favorite place to read a book: Two places! Either the beach (any beach) or my “book nook,” which is a part of my bedroom that used to be the repository for Amazon orders awaiting returns and other miscellaneous items. My Christmas present was to get a big cozy chair and lamp to put in there. I added a noise machine recently and now it is truly an oasis from the craziness of the household! In the era of COVID, with all three of my kids and my husband home all the time, this has also become my de facto writing space.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Anne from Anne of Green Gables

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: Seventh grade English class. Everyone had to write a short story. Mine was some sort of (terrible, I’m sure) horror story about a car accident on a dark road (I think). It might have had something to do with Halloween too. I can’t remember. Seventh grade was a long time ago. Maybe it was eighth grade? Definitely junior high. Anyway, I remember reading the story aloud to the class and really loving the positive reactions people had. It took me quite a long time after that to get to it for real, but that’s the first time I remember thinking, Wow! People like what I wrote!

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Hardback first, then audio.  Certain authors I always go right for the audio though. Especially if the book is English or Irish or Scottish—I love to hear the accents on audio. Ruth Ware comes to mind! I hardly ever read on an e-reader. I’d do that only in an emergency.

The last book I read: Galley of Super Host by Kate Russo

Pen & paper or computer: Combination. I go in phases where I’ll write on paper and then type it in after. If I’m really up against a deadline I have to go right to the computer because I’m faster that way. If I write on paper it has to be with a really good pen: my good fountain pen or a nice felt tip.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Casey from Lily King’s Writers and Lovers

If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: Linguist or translator

Favorite decade in fashion history: 50s into very early 60s. If we could all dress like Mrs. Maisel all the time that would make me very happy.

Place I’d most like to travel: South America

My signature drink: A big glass of Cabernet in the winter (or, OK, anytime). Dark and Stormy in the summer. Tequila shot VERY RARELY.

Favorite artist: Visual? The fact that I had to think long and hard about that means that I guess I don’t have one. Is that weird? Can I do musical artist? Lizzo!

Number one on my bucket list: luxury long-distance train ride, maybe the Orient Express, even though I know it doesn’t exist the way it used to, or the Royal Scotsman

Anything else you'd like to add: Thanks for having me! Great questions!
