Author Interview - Lindsey Kelk

Author of In Case You Missed It.

“When Ros comes home after three years away, she’s ready to pick up with life exactly where she left it. But her friends have moved on, her parents have rekindled their romance, and her bedroom is now a garden shed. Suddenly, she’s swept up in nostalgia for the way things were. Then her phone begins to ping, with messages from her old life. Including one number she thought she’d erased for good – the man who broke her heart. Is this her second chance at one big love? Sometimes we all want to see what we’ve been missing…”

Author I draw inspiration from: I'm inspired by every book I read, one way or another but an author that makes me want to be better is Emma Straub. I love her writing and her characters and her work really drives me to achieve that same lightness of touch with so much heart and meaning in every word.

Favorite place to read a book: Right now, I'm in a really nice habit (some may say rut) of settling in on the sofa to read for an hour or seven every evening but honestly, my favourite place is the bath tub. Growing up, it was the only place I could get some peace and privacy and I still find it so relaxing. It plays havoc with my hot water bill though!

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: I have many questions for Heathcliff. Also, imagine Heathcliff in an elevator. Possibly I would not survive this encounter so please can someone take care of my cats. And my husband.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I can't remember a time when I didn't. It sounds clichéd but I've always written and always wanted to tell stories. I didn't truly believe it was an option until it was actually happening but it is something I've always wanted.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: This is too hard! I can't do audiobooks easily because I'm a very fast reader and they're always too slow for my liking (speeding them up is weird). Hardbacks are cumbersome but exciting, paperbacks are convenient but I don't want to wait to read my favourite authors which leads me to ebooks. Wow, who would have guessed it?

The last book I read: Without shame, I declare it was Midnight Sun

Pen & paper or computer: Computer. I don't have the patience for my appalling handwriting. My teachers were right.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Laurie from Mhairi McFarlane's If I Never Met You. She's smart, fearless and ambitious. I could use a pep talk from her every now and then.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: Professional Wrestler. I co-host a wrestling podcase called Tights & Fights and in another life…

Favorite decade in fashion history: The sixties. I love vintage and have a ton of cute little scooter dresses that I’m obsessed with. If only I could get out my sweatpants now and then…

Place I’d most like to travel: Japan. There's literally no good reason for me not to have visited before now but it's been the top of my list for years.

My signature drink: I want to say anything wet but if I must narrow it down, I'm going margarita. I've perfected my recipe in lockdown and I'm very pleased with it... hic.

Favorite artist: I love Kara Walker. I saw A Subtlety when I lived in Brooklyn and was moved to tears. After that, I went to see everything I could, whenever I could. African't is on show at The Broad in LA (where I live now) and I've been to see it so many times. It's so visceral, I can stare at it for days.

Number one on my bucket list: I'd love to write a movie or a TV show. My husband is an editor for TV and film and I find the entire industry fascinating plus I love to tell stories. It would be fun to tell one in a different medium.

Anything else you'd like to add: Just thanks for having me!
