Kristin Fouquet
Author Interview - Kristin Fouquet
Author of The Repertoire
Vocalist Audrey Reine has enjoyed local stardom at a famous jazz club in New Orleans for nearly two decades. When the club owner, her lover, replaces her with an ingénue, Audrey must negotiate an unexpected new life while trying to rescue her tentative musical career. The Repertoire is a jazz novella for a new era.
Author I draw inspiration from: I admire how Tennessee Williams could reveal the authentic nature of his characters. Being a playwright, his dialogue is spectacular.
Favorite place to read a book: I’ll read anywhere, but my favorite place is at home in a comfortable chair with my cat on my lap.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: I think I’d like to spend some time with Renée Néré, Colette’s protagonist in The Vagabond. I would ask her if she regrets her choice at the end of the book. Since my French is shameful, we wouldn’t be alone as there would have to be an English translator stuck in there with us.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I knew when I was fourteen because I started writing short stories for fun.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: They each have their place. I usually read paperbacks and hardbacks.
The last book I read: Creole Trombone: Kid Ory and the Early Years of Jazz by John McCusker. Highly recommended.
Pen & paper or computer: I always start out writing with a black pen on paper (including this interview) and then type it on the computer. I am an embarrassingly slow typist.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: I believe I’d be great pals with Holly Golightly from Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She was a Southern woman who really knew how she wanted to reinvent herself, and I just adore reinvention.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: I write and photograph. So, if I weren’t an author, I’d just be a photographer. Yet, if talent didn't count, I’d do all the things I wish I could do like paint, act, sing, and dance.
Favorite decade in fashion history: Hands down, the 1920s. Couldn’t you guess by the cloche hat in my photo? I’ve been a flapper at heart since childhood. I just wish I had the garçonnière physique which wears those fashions so well. Also, many thanks to Coco Chanel for inventing the little black dress!
Place I’d most like to travel: I haven’t traveled outside of the U.S. in years. I’d like to visit Spain and Italy.
My signature drink: Dry red wine is my usual, but I love champagne too.
Favorite artist: It's impossible for me to choose one artist! I could give you a long list. I’ve always been attracted to the Surrealists. I only wish they had been more open to women artists at the time.
Number one on my bucket list: I would love to return to Paris.
Anything else you'd like to add: I’m grateful to have been born in New Orleans. The city has shaped my sensibilities and inspired me beyond measure.
Also, thanks so much for having me here, Ashley!
