Author Interview - HS Burney

Author of The Lake Templeton Murders

The Lake Templeton Murders is a mystery set in a small town on the West Coast of Canada. A body is found at a beach in Lake Templeton, a town of only five thousand people where secrets run deep. Private Investigator, Fati Rizvi, sets out to solve the case. On the surface, it looks like an accident or suicide. But the murder victim, a City Treasurer, was suspected of embezzlement, and has a dark past. Everyone involved in the case, from the City Mayor to the victim's secret paramour, is hiding something. As Fati valiantly unravels the knots, confounded at every turn, another body is found on the beach. Is it the same killer? And can Fati stop them before they strike again?

Author I draw inspiration from: Harlan Coben. The tales are twisty and the ending is always unexpected.

Favorite place to read a book: On my patio, stretched out on my lounger!

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Sherlock Holmes from the famous series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock is the quintessential detective. Even though he's from a different time, he has a unique way of looking cases. Detective Fati Rizvi can learn a lot from Sherlock. In fact, when she was a child, she wanted to marry him!

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: When I opened my first Sidney Sheldon novel as an eleven-year-old. Growing up in Pakistan, I used to purchase second-hand books from roadside stalls. Sidney Sheldon was contraband - my mother did not want me reading such 'mature' books at my age. That heightened the excitement. I loved the highly complex strong but flawed female characters and longed to create such characters myself one day.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: EBook - It took me a while to convert but once I did, I never looked back! Ebooks are so convenient. I can take them with me wherever I go and never have to worry about running out of space.

The last book I read: The Woman in The Window, by A.J. Finn

Pen & paper or computer: Computer. Handwriting is a lost art. On my computer, I can write a lot faster, erase at my leisure - and actually make sense of what I wrote after! Not to mention, no hand cramping. Although I do like plotting out my stories on an old-fashioned whiteboard!

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Miss Marple created by Agatha Christie. She is an intelligent woman with many layers and I would never get bored in conversation with her. She's independent, grounded, and a woman far ahead of her time. She's someone I can look up to and relate to at the same time.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: A banker? Actually, I am a banker by daytime and an author by night. My writing career plays to my creative side while the banking career caters to my extroverted analytical side.

Favorite decade in fashion history: 1930s and 40s - They were all about crisp looks, long and lean silhouettes, and solid colors. Yes, my fashion sense is chic yet slightly conservative. Although I love the odd loud pattern.

Place I’d most like to travel: I want to see more of Asia. I grew up in Asia but never spent much time traveling there. I immigrated to North America at the age of 18 and have seen much more of US and Canada than I have of Asia. I want to see Malaysia, Indonesia, the Maldives. So many beautiful places to visit and so little time.

My signature drink: Grey Goose vodka martini, extra dry

Favorite artist: Salvador Dali. Every piece is confusing, thought-provoking, and a bit awe-inspiring

Number one on my bucket list: Take a month off work and drive across Canada, hitting every province
