Author Interview - Farah Heron
Author of Remember Me Tomorrow
Aleeza, a lonely first year university student realizes she can talk to the former resident of her dorm room, Jay. Weird thing is, Jay has been missing for months, and she is talking to Jay in the past-- before his disappearance. Aleeza and Jay work together to find out what happened to Jay in her timeline, so it doesn't happen to the Jay in his timeline. But as they look closely at Jay's friends and family, they find more questions than answers, and Aleeza wonders if maybe Jay isn't what he seems. And things get even more complicated when Aleeza starts developing real feelings for her mysterious kind-of-roommate.
Favorite place to read a book:
I love listening to audio books while I'm on a walk in my neighborhood. I'm one of those annoying audiobook listeners who listen at a higher speed. I've been able to work myself up to 2.5 speed, which allows me to finish a book in only 2-3 days, which is like a superpower to me.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:
Catherine Morland from Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. I suspect she'd freak out, and I could feel useful by calming her down. Then we could tell each other stories while we wait to be rescued. I would love to talk to her about fabrics, Henry Tilney, and about our favorite gothic romance authors.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:
I always wanted to be an author in the back of my mind, but I didn't start writing until I was in my late thirties. I never do anything halfway, so I was determined to get published soon after I started writing, so i studied the market, and tried out different genres until I found my writing voice. I did meet my goal--my first book was published only three years after I started writing fiction. Remember Me Tomorrow is my eighth book, and my first mystery, and I am still pinching myself that I get to write books as a job.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:
I used to be an e-book only reader, but lately I've been listening to audio books almost exclusively.
The last book I read:
Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett. I loved it! The world building was so immersing, and I loved all the interactions between grumpy professor Emily, and her cheery colleague/rival Wendell.
Pen & paper or computer:
I do most of my work on my laptop, but sometimes use my iPad with a keyboard when I'm not home. I will often take notes about edits with pen and paper. I've tried dictating books, but I spend too much time fixing up the manuscript after I dictate, so I inevitably got back to typing. I do dictate emails and texts all the time, though.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with:
Definitely Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. Like Lizzy, I love people watching, traveling, gossiping, and traipsing about the countryside.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:
This is my third career! I was previously in Human Resources, and then Psychological Counselling. I think if I wasn't writing I would go back to being a therapist or a youth counsellor.
Favorite decade in fashion history:
Lately I've been really into the seventies aesthetic. High waisted pants, tall shoes, and earth tones. Not to mention, wood-paneled walls, egg chairs, and macrame. I was born in the seventies, so I think the vibe imprinted on me.
Place I’d most like to travel:
Southern Spain, specifically Málaga, Granada, Seville and Córdoba. I've been to Madrid and Valencia, but Southern Spain has been on my bucket list forever. I'm hoping to finally go next year. I specifically want to go to see the old Moorish Muslim architecture. I've also always wanted to see more of Asia-- as I've only been to Taiwan. I did have a trip of a lifetime several years ago when I took my husband and kids to Tanzania. We went to a few cities and town in the country, and then went on a Safari though several game parks. My parents are both from Tanzania, and it meant a lot to take my kids to the country where their ancestors came from.
My signature drink:
Masala Chai, or a cafe latte. I'm actually a huge tea drinker, love to chose teas based on my mood. I love sencha in the summertime, either iced or hot.
Favorite artist:
I'm a big music nerd, and have eclectic taste with favorites from every decade, but I will always love Depeche Mode the most. Right now I've also been into Boy Genius, Alvvays, Chappell Roan, and Camera Obscura.
Number one on my bucket list:
I would love to see someone on public transportation or in a park reading one of my books.
Anything else you'd like to add:
I'm a serial hobbyist - and pick up new interests often. Some of my favorites are cooking, sewing, making miniature rooms, and nail art. I've also recently started mastering the Rubik's cube.
