Author I draw inspiration from: One? You’ve gotta be kidding. Here’s a partial list. Contemporary writers— Anne Tyler and Kent Haruf, classics— Hardy, Dickens, and Edith Wharton, poets, Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost. And of course the inimitable L. Frank Baum.

Favorite place to read a book: I In a doctor’s waiting room or while standing in line. Pity the poor souls who scroll impatiently though their bleak news feeds while I’m transported away to another world.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Mr. Darcy. Swoon.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I wanted to be an author as long as I can remember— I have always been a story scribbler and a journal-keeper, but I had a now-or-never moment when I turned forty.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: I’ll read anything but I do love hardcovers. I read ebooks mostly for research.

The last book I read: Northern Farm by Henry Beston. I read it for research and I was blown away by its profundity and beauty.I’m a sucker for writing about the natural world.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Anne Shirley

If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: That’s easy. I’m a nurse-midwife and I’d go back to it if I had enough time. I worked and wrote through my first 5 books. Quite a juggling act.

Favorite decade in fashion history: The seventies— think Joni Mitchell and Carol King.

Place I’d most like to travel: I’d like to take a long journey across the western United States on horseback.

My signature drink: Tea

Favorite artist: Mary Cassatt

Number one on my bucket list: Own an independent bookstore with my daughters.
