Author Interview - Deborah Crombie
Author I draw inspiration from: Lately, I am in love with Kate Atkinson. I’m starting the Jackson Brodie books over from the beginning and reading Life After Life.
Favorite place to read a book: In bed. It is my blissful and much anticipated end of every day.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: I had a hard time getting past “stuck in the elevator.” Someone calming. Maybe Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: When I wrote my first poem at age fourteen.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: All of the above! There is no substitute for a hardcover book, but I’m very attached to my Kindle Paperwhite. I even read on my phone.
The last book I read: An advance copy of The Mountains Wild by Sarah Stewart Taylor. [HBL Note: Still as Death, another book by Sarah Stewart Taylor, is pictured below because I couldn’t find cover art for The Mountains Wild which comes out in 2020.]
Pen & paper or computer: Both. I’m a journaler, and I do lots of plotting and note-taking on paper. Also a fountain pen nerd.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Jenn McKinlay’s Scarlett Parker from her Hat Shop Mysteries series. Scarlett owns (and lives above) a hat shop in my beloved Portobello Road in Notting Hill. And she likes afternoon teas. We’d have a blast.
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: Film set designer.
Favorite decade in fashion history: The Twenties, when women were liberated from cumbersome clothing.
Place I’d most like to travel: Ireland. I’ve never been there.
My signature drink: A gin cocktail, made with fresh lemon or lime juice, pomegranate juice, and a splash of Prosecco.
Favorite artist: I have always loved Renoir, but I recently saw the exhibition of his late paintings at the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth and was blown away. The paintings were breathtaking.
Number one on my bucket list: The Beatles Tour in Liverpool (which I’m doing in November!)
