Author Interview - Caroline DuBois
Author of The Places We Sleep.
Author I draw inspiration from: I draw inspiration from Kate DiCamillo, mainly because she writes in various genres—mystery, realistic fiction, fantasy. I admire how she doesn’t feel bound to be branded to just one. She chases the story she wants to write—whether it’s about Despereaux, a mouse, who wants to save a human princess or about a girl named Opal who befriends a dog at a supermarket and names it Winn-Dixie.
Favorite place to read a book: I read everywhere—typically I have a different book going in the various rooms of my house. But I especially like reading outside on my porch in the sunlight. I take a book with me wherever I go, in case I find myself waiting. Other people are often on their phones during these times. I choose to think they’re also reading.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: I enjoy all forms of books for their particular traits—ebook, audiobook, hardback, and paperback. For me, the concept of “book” isn’t bound by the medium. I enjoying sliding to new pages on ebooks and noting my progress through the book. I enjoy audiobooks while driving, soaking up the voice talents. Around my home, I mostly read traditional paper books. And yes—I’m nerdy in that I like the smell of paper books (and libraries) and putting a good old-fashioned bookmark into them when I pause.
Last book you read: Clean Getaway by Nic Stone. You must read it! It’s quite a journey.
Pen & paper or computer: I’d like to say I write with a quill, but that’d be a lie. I tend to write initial plot, character, or poem brainstorms in journals with mechanical pencils or pens. I really like the children’s colorful Paper Mate Triangular mechanical pencils. I revise and create longer manuscripts on my laptop.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Cliché as it probably sounds, I’d befriend Harry Potter. One, he’s magic. But two, I love his humility. It’s a trait I especially admire in real, non-magical people.
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: If I weren’t an author, I’d be a teacher, because that’s what I actually am in addition to being an author. If I weren’t an author-teacher, I’d like to be a professional walker and observer.
Favorite decade in fashion history: I like the eighties because of the in-your-face colors, textures, and patterns—think Cyndi Lauper.
Place I’d most like to travel: I’d love to travel to Ireland. It seems so green, and I love green—and then there’s all the culture and history to explore as well.
