Author Interview - Amelia Diane Coombs
Author of Drop Dead Sisters
Three sisters reunite on a family vacation and rekindle their relationship the only way they know how—by covering each other’s tracks in a real-life murder mystery not even they can figure out.
Remi Finch has spent the better part of her adult life avoiding family—especially her sisters. They just don’t click. Besides, her unconventional upbringing and major anxiety have convinced Remi that she can’t build a relationship with anyone. Period.
When her parents plan a family reunion camping trip to celebrate their anniversary, Remi’s willing to reconnect, if only because she doesn’t have a choice. But then a dead body turns up at their campsite, and their sisterly bonding kicks into high gear.
No one knows the whole story, but the Finch women are prepared to cover up the pieces before anyone tries to put them together. It’s a precautionary measure, probably unnecessary. Nobody else was there, so how could they have seen anything?
Between old grudges and new dynamics, a handsome park ranger, and a body that won’t stay hidden, Remi is about to learn that nothing strengthens family ties quite like crime.
Author I draw inspiration from:
In the mystery realm, definitely Elle Cosimano and Jesse Q. Sutanto. I love both Elle's Finlay Donovan series and Jesse's Auntie series. They're so so much fun.
Favorite place to read a book:
I read every night before bed, so that has to be my answer. But sometimes, when I'm reading for work, I curl up on my couch.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:
I've been a voracious reader my entire life, but I don't think I really understood that someone could be an author until I was older. Even then, I didn't think it was a... viable career goal. But my dad, who is also a big reader, always encouraged me to chase my dreams. I think when I was getting my MFA, I realized that, hey, maybe I can do this as a job, and while my journey to publication was pretty rocky (what pub journey isn't) I'm so happy I hung in there and that I get to write words for a living.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:
Ebook! I mostly read in bed at night, so I've always found an ebook to be easier to read in that particular, lazy situation. But I love a good hardback just for the texture and feel.
The last book I read:
I just finished WITH LOVE, FROM COLD WAR by Alicia Thompson, and had such a blast with it. I'm not a huge romance reader, but I adore Alicia's books and this was the only one of hers that I'd yet to read. Highly recommend, especially as the holiday season sets in.
Pen & paper or computer:
The computer! I actually have a condition called dysgraphia, which makes handwriting quite difficult. I can't hold a pen or pencil properly. So, I do everything on my laptop or phone, from jotting down book ideas, to arranging my schedule, and even making grocery lists.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:
A psychologist or therapist of some kind. I actually went to college initially with the goal of studying psychology and getting into forensic psychology but, it turns out, I couldn't handle the required science classes (my brain is not a science brain!) and decided to pivot to English.
Favorite decade in fashion history:
Purely from an aesthetic viewpoint, I love eighties fashion. I love a good, oversized sweater and some high waisted jeans.
Place I’d most like to travel:
I'd really love to visit Ireland! When I was younger, I had the chance to visit Europe with my family, but I haven't been out of the country since. My husband also hasn't traveled much, and it's on our bucket list in the future. I'd also love to visit Australia, even though pretty much everything there could kill me.
My signature drink:
I'm a huge coffee drinker. Other than water, coffee is pretty much the only thing I drink. Not very exciting, but the caffeine keeps me going!
Number one on my bucket list:
I actually don't have a bucket list of any kind, but one random thing I've always wanted to try is glass blowing. I feel like I'd be awful at it, since I have asthma, but the entire process looks so interesting.
