2021 Netflix Holiday Movies. Ranked.
Disclaimer: This is not a complete list of all the new holiday movies Netflix came out with this year. This is just a list of the ones I’ve seen in order of how much I liked them. I hope this helps you narrow down which of the millions and trillions of holiday movies there are out there.
1) Single All the Way
Such. a. cute. movie! It has a great cast, including Jennifer Coolidge, Jennifer Robertson, Kathy Najimy, and Michael Urie, who (fun fact) narrated Steven Rowley’s audiobooks including Lily and the Octopus and The Editor. It is about Peter and Nick, two best friends who hatch a plan to pretend to be lovers so that Peter’s mom won’t try to set him up over the holidays. The acting was legit good and it was such a cute story.
2) A Castle For Christmas
An author runs away to Scotland after the ending of her last book is not well received (that's an understatement...) She befriends a delightful knitting crew, falls for a duke (of course), and buys a castle. A little bit cheesy, a sweet romance, and a book connection!
3) Love Hard
A writer flies from LA to the East Coast to surprise the man she met on a dating app and with whom she's falling in love. But upon arrival, she quickly learns she's been catfished. Now the man who catfished her agrees to help her win the heart of the man she thought she'd been dating all along. I don’t love the idea of women getting catfished, even if it does work out for the best in the end. Otherwise, this was another fun movie that I really enjoyed watching.
4) The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star
It helps if you’ve seen the first two Princess Switch movies. The first one was cute, even if it did have too many cliches to keep track of: falling in love with a prince, finding an identical twin you never knew about, etc. On paper, they are the cheesiest of all cheesy movies…and yet I keep watching them. They’re just so darn charming. I think a lot of it has to do with Vanessa Hudgens’ acting. She’s good. Anyway, this one is about the three lookalikes getting into more shenanigans impersonating one another after the star of peace, on loan from the Vatican, is stolen.
5) Father Christmas Is Back
This is the only movie on the list I thought was just plain not good. And I had high hopes given the A-list cast. But the acting from most of the characters was so cringy, Nathalie Cox being the worst. Her acting was so over the top it was hard to watch. Also, my friend Kit of The Kittchen did a series of Instagram stories about the ages of the actors in relation to the ages they are playing relative to one another. Needless to say, that was also cringe-inducing. Skip this one unless you literally have nothing else to watch.
Coming up - A California Christmas: City Lights
This movie comes out on Dec. 16 and I’m really looking forward to watching it. I very much enjoyed the first movie in this series, A California Christmas. It was still your typical holiday romance, but with a lot more depth and heart. So if you haven’t seen the first one, it would be a good one to watch before 12/16. Callie is a girl who is trying to save the family farm from foreclosure while also caring for her mom who has cancer. Joseph is the son of a powerful investor who wants to buy the farm land. Joseph is sent to close the deal, but instead he poses as a farm hand and ends up falling in love with Callie…then she finds out the truth.
