White Fur
Book Review - White Fur by Jardine Libaire
The more books I read the more I appreciate a book that is just different. In the beginning, I was intrigued by Jardine Libaire's writing style. She is a master of similes. On page three she wrote, "...the house is forlorn like a society girl forced to get a job." I was hooked by the imagery of her words. Her writing style is different from what I had been reading and I appreciated something new.
White Fur by Jardine Libaire is about Elise Perez, a young girl who grew up in public housing without a father and a mother who was more interested in her latest boyfriend than raising her houseful of kids. Elise's boyfriend, Jamey, is from an entirely different world. As the heir to an investment bank fortune, he grew up in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Manhattan. His parents are notorious for their messy divorce as well as their wealth.
As the story continued, I often found myself wondering if I liked the story. It was weird. I don't know any one quite like the two main characters in this book. I liked them but I couldn't relate to them or their situation. Their lives were just so different from mine. Their personalities were so different from anyone I know. I was intrigued... but confused by them, too. I'm not sure I always got what was happening, why they were doing what they were doing, or the author's intentions. But I also couldn't put the book down. This is one of those books I wish I had read with a book club - I need to unpack this one with someone else!
