Book Review - The Child by Fiona Barton

I really enjoyed being reunited with Kate Waters. I first met her in Fiona Barton's first book, The Widow (read my review of it here. Also...let's take a moment to appreciate how far my book reviews have come since March when I first started this blog!) Kate is a journalist for The Post. She got her first big story when a widow, whose recently deceased husband was suspected of kidnapping a young girl from her front yard, decides it is time to tell-all. With the help of Kate, the police are able to solve this cold case.

Kate Waters is back in The Child. This story begins with the discovery of the remains of an infant child at a construction site. When digging through missing children's cases, Kate finds Angela whose infant child was stolen from the maternity ward at the hospital where she gave birth. All signs point to the remains belonging to Angela's baby.

But, as you'd suspect, the story doesn't conclude quite so easily. The more Kate digs into the neighborhood where the remains were found, the more crimes she uncovers. She is often conflicted about which stories should be kept family secrets and which stories she should report. The police, her editors, and her conscience are often at odds.

The most disappointing thing about this book is that I predicted its outcome, at least in part, half way though the book. And I almost never see an ending coming (I try not to think about it too much, I like to be surprised!) This one was pretty obvious. But despite that, I was eager to see how the story would unfold. How would Kate, the detectives, and the families figure out what happened? I read this book in just 3 days so it must have been good!
