The Nightingale

The Nightingale

Book Review - The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

This is, by far, the best book I've read in a long time. It is about two sisters and their fight to survive WWII in occupied France. Vianne Mauriac's lives with her daughter in the small village of Carriveau while her husband is fighting on the front. She never imagined France would be invaded but now she finds herself living with a German captain who requisitioned her home. Isabelle is Vianne's 18-year-old sister, and like most teenagers, a bit rebellious and head over heels for Gäetan. But when her love betrays her, she joins the resistance risking her life to help others.

This book broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes, but somehow it was also beautiful. It is a story that will stick with you long after you've read the last page. Did you know I wrote my dissertation on WWII war brides? As a result, I've read quite a bit about WWII, fiction and nonfiction alike, but this book is one of the best.
