Book Review - The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer has this incredible ability to tell lighthearted, hilarious stories from her youth and (without missing a beat) transition into a heartbreaking story about her father's MS, or gun violence, or domestic abuse. I loved this book. I really loved it. I loved listening to the author read it on Audible - I could hear her voice quiver when she was talking about a subject she was particularly passionate about. I could hear the vulnerability in her voice. And no one can deliver a punch line quite like Amy Schumer. I'm also glad that my husband and I listened to it together...it'll be a book we talk about for a long time. So many stories to unpack, so many topics for us to discuss and debate.

My favorite quote from her book has to do with being an introvert. Amy gets me!

“Being an introvert doesn’t mean you’re shy. It means you enjoy being alone. Not just enjoy it—you need it. If you’re a true introvert, other people are basically energy vampires. You don’t hate them; you just have to be strategic about when you expose yourself to them—like the sun. They give you life, sure, but they can also burn you...”
― Amy Schumer, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo

I've seen this definition of introvert a number of times, but as an introvert, I think it is worth repeating as many times as I come across it. In everyday life I don't really think about or notice my need to be alone - out of habit I just carve out this time without thinking about it. I notice it most when I'm on vacation with family and friends. They could spend all day, every day in each other's company and talking the whole time. I mean literally the entire time - from the moment they wake up to the moment they fall asleep. Whereas I'm over here wondering how to slip out and just hang out in my room by myself. It has nothing to do with not enjoying myself - I'm having a great time! But in order to continue to have a great time I need alone time. Otherwise I'm just tired. Or sunburned as Amy puts it.
