The Thing About Jellyfish
Book Review - The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin
I first heard about this book from Reese Witherspoon's Instagram. If you aren't following her, it is worth checking out just for her book recommendations. On top of that, her production company, Pacific Standard Films, is rumored to be making this book into a movie! Fingers crossed this is true.
It is told from the perspective of a 12-year old girl who recently lost her best friend in a drowning accident. Suzy doesn't believe, can't believe, that things happen for no reason. So she concocts this idea, and sets out to prove this theory, that her friend drowned because of a rare jellyfish sting. Her plan requires quite a bit of research and perhaps a solo trip around the world, Suzy will do whatever it takes.
It is a beautifully written story exploring themes of life, death, grieving, love, hope, and the beauty of the world and in humankind.
