The Au Pair
Book Feature - The Au Pair by Emma Rous
HBL Note: This book is getting so much hype - I’m seeing it in a lot of the “books to keep an eye on” lists that circulate in the media. It certainly sounds intriguing! Imagine if you found a photograph of your family that didn’t fit the story you were told. Seraphine found a picture of her mother holding a single baby after giving birth, but she’s a twin. Who is this baby? Why weren’t they both pictured? And what does her mother look so happy in this photo when she committed suicide just moments later? A good mystery has lots of unanswered questions, so I imagine this one is going to be a doozy.
From the Publisher:
Seraphine Mayes and her twin brother, Danny, were born in the middle of summer at their family's estate on the Norfolk coast. Within hours of their birth, their mother threw herself from the cliffs, the au pair fled, and the village thrilled with whispers of dark cloaks, changelings, and the aloof couple who drew a young nanny into their inner circle.
Now an adult, Seraphine mourns the recent death of her father. While going through his belongings, she uncovers a family photograph that raises dangerous questions. It was taken on the day the twins were born, and in the photo, their mother, surrounded by her husband and her young son, is smiling serenely and holding just one baby.
Who is the child, and what really happened that day?
