When Emma Donoghue, the bestselling author of ROOM, describes a book as "A vivid and sensuous domestic drama…”, you read the book. I committed to reading this book way back in August. When I saw it appear next on my list of books to read, I had to go back to my email thread to recall what the book was about. That’s when I remembered that I agreed to read the book after reading only one line of the publicist’s email that included Emma Donoghue’s quote. Guys, this book totally lived up to Emma’s promise.

The Companion by Kim Taylor Blakemore introduces us to Lucy Blunt who is convicted of two murders and is waiting for her execution by hanging. As she waits in her prison cell, she tells us the story of how she comes to replace Rebecca as Eugenie’s companion, the two women she’s accused of killing. Lucy maintains her innocence of the crimes for which she is convicted, while also admitting to other crimes and sins. The book builds up to the final pages - will Lucy hang for these crimes or will Eugenie’s sister-in-law, Aurora, save her from the rope?

My book selections are all over the place right now and I am loving the diversity! This book was a slow simmer for most of the story and came to a roiling boil at the end. I read twice as much as I had planned on the last day of reading this book because I just had to know how it ended. This is not your typical murder mystery with cliffhangers at the end of every chapter, but it satisfied my desire to read a mystery while also appealing to the side of me that adores historical fiction.
