One Day in December
Book Review - One Day in December by Josie Silver
A member of my book club suggested we read this book for our December meeting, I interpreted it as a final decision so I read it right away. I think my book club is still discussing which book they want to read, they aren’t all keen on romantic stories. I chose to listen to this as an audiobook and it was one of the best performances I’ve listened to. It was narrated by Eleanor Tomlinson and Charlie Anson, both gave tremendous performances but I think Eleanor really stole the show. She included sighs and noises that really expressed emotion far better than words ever could. I was really blown away. If you are even remotely interested in audiobooks, I think you’ll enjoy this book.
The story is about Laurie who, while riding a bus in the city sees a man out the window and it is love at first sight. They make eye contact and seemingly have a full conversation with just their eyes and gestures. He tries to hop on the bus but misses it by seconds and Laurie watches the handsome man fade away. She spends a year looking for him and dreaming about him with her best friend Sarah. They play a game while at bars where Sarah would point to a handsome man and ask Laurie, “Is that him?” Laurie all but gives up hope until Sarah brings home her new boyfriend and Laurie is face-to-face with Jack, the man from the bus.
Although this book is a romance novel, I think it does a great job of illustrating the complexities of life, love, and friendship. Laurie is put into an impossible situation. She and her best friend are in love with the same guy. Should she tell Sarah that Jack is the guy from the bus, putting a damper on Sarah’s newfound love? Or should she keep quiet about it and let Sarah and Jack enjoy their love for one another? Either way, Laurie knows her relationship with Sarah is forever altered.
