Author Interview - Priscilla Paton
Author of SHOULD GRACE FAIL
“When a disgraced policeman who rescues addicts and trafficking victims is murdered, Detectives Erik Jansson and Deb Metzger have their skills put to the test as killers target a vulnerable girl, an empathetic pianist, and a man generous to a fault.”
Author I draw inspiration from: Usually the author of the last book I read. In general, Louise Penny and Mindy Mejia for mystery writing, and literary novelist Richard Russo for his combination of tragedy, humor, and compassion.
Favorite place to read a book: Next to a window with a view of trees and birds
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Nero Wolfe's Archie Goodwin. He'd be good company and figure out how to restart the elevator.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: When I could first read. More precisely, when I could first hold a volume of the MY BOOKHOUSE series, 1928 edition. We had an inherited set in our farmhouse when I was growing up in Maine and I read every page.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: All of the above.
The last book I read: THE HOUSE OF BROKEN ANGELS, by Luis Alberto Urrea
Pen & paper or computer: Computer, though I jot down ideas on note pads and later can't make sense of them.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Hmm, we give literary characters so many issues that they can be difficult. When I was young, Trixie Belden. Now, Deborah Crombie's detective pair Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: I had been a professor of American literature, with a side interest in art. Now--maybe a nature photographer, no weddings.
Favorite decade in fashion history: The 1940s. Lauren Bacall's suits in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT and THE BIG SLEEP
Place I’d most like to travel: The Amalfi Coast, Italy. Sun, scenery, food, wine.
My signature drink: A chilled crisp white wine
Favorite artist: Winslow Homer--his oils of the Maine Coast and his watercolors of the Caribbean.
Number one on my bucket list: Visit my twin granddaughters.
Anything else you'd like to add: If I'm not writing, thinking about writing, or reading to inspire writing, I don't know what I'd do with myself.
