Laura Hankin
Author Interview - Laura Hankin
Author I draw inspiration from: Oh, there are too many to pick just one! But if I had to narrow it down: I most aspire to be a combination of Liane Moriarty and Meg Wolitzer (with just a dash of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, if I'm allowed to pull in a writer from the TV realm!)
Favorite place to read a book: On a comfortable couch, under a big old blanket, in front of a roaring fire please.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: If I wanted to get out quickly, Hermione Granger. Otherwise, I imagine that Jo March and I would be able to keep ourselves entertained for hours by making up stories. (Also I want to gossip with her about Laurie.)
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: My second grade teacher had us all write and illustrate our own books to read out loud at parents night. My classmates read their stories about how they liked baseball, or their favorite colors. Then I stood up and read my odyssey about the history of my family stretching back three generations in which I revealed multiple awkward family secrets. I think it was around then that I realized I loved writing (and maybe oversharing too).
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: I go back and forth between hardback and paperback! Although if I'm reading something with a super-involving plot, sometimes an audiobook is best because it slows me down enough that I don't just skim through to find out what happens.
The last book I read: SUCH A FUN AGE, and it deserves all the hype it's getting.
Pen & paper or computer: Pen and paper will always be my first love - there's nothing like a good journaling session - but I do most of my writing on a computer because I'm much faster that way.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Cassandra Mortmain from I CAPTURE THE CASTLE. She is the most charming narrator I've ever encountered. Although I'd also very much like to go traveling with Arthur Less.
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: I initially moved to New York to try and make it as an actor, so I'd probably still be doing that, and bashing my head against the wall in frustration. I'm not very good at picking stable careers.
Favorite decade in fashion history: To be completely unoriginal, the 1920s!
Place I’d most like to travel: I've wanted to go to Tuscany ever since I saw Under The Tuscan Sun in movie theaters. Apparently my high school self really identified with a middle-aged divorcee?
My signature drink: An old fashioned
Favorite artist: I always love a good Gustav Klimt!
Number one on my bucket list: To write a screenplay, and get it produced. I outlined one a year ago and have been too scared to actually go back and write it, but consider this answer my attempt to hold myself accountable.
Anything else you'd like to add: I so hope that you'll check out and enjoy HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT!
