Author Interview - Jennifer Dupee
Author of The Little French Bridal Shop
“The books is set in motion when Larisa Pearl returns to her small seaside hometown upon the death of her Great Aunt Ursula. She’s just lost her job, she’s recently broken up with her boyfriend, and she’s struggling with her mother’s failing health. On a whim, she wanders into the local bridal shop and buys a dress even though she has no groom. Soon word spreads all over town that she’s getting married. Rather than dispel the rumor, she perpetuates it. Small town chaos ensues.”
Author I draw inspiration from: Ann Patchett
Favorite place to read a book: the windowseat in my living room
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Oh, gosh. This is a tough one. Clair Abshire from The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. So many questions for her. Also, might we be able to find a way out of that elevator?
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: For as long as I can remember! My kindergarten report card read “Jennifer doesn’t want to talk to anyone. She just wants to sit in the corner and read.” My love of writing grew from there. Writing is something planted deep in my psyche and a pleasure/challenge to which I will always return.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Hardback
The last book I read: Desmond Hall, Your Corner Dark
Pen & paper or computer: a little of both - pen & paper, then computer
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Lettie Hempstock in The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: architect or furniture maker
Favorite decade in fashion history: 1960's
Place I’d most like to travel: France
My signature drink: Old-fashioned or Manhatten
Favorite artist: Edgar Degas
Anything else you'd like to add: Though the book tackles some difficult subjects (dementia, illness of parent), it’s ultimately a very hopeful book. I think readers will come away from it with a sense of renewal and a promise that when times are hard, we can find relief in facing our vulnerabilities and connecting with those we love.
