Author Interview - Hannah McKinnon

Author of Message in the Sand

“Message in the Sand is a love story about people and place. On a private estate in the quiet hills of Saybrook, Connecticut, Alan Lancaster and his family are preparing for their much anticipated summer ball at White Pines. Alan, Anne, and their two daughters, Julia and Pippa, are well known and regarded in small Sabyrook as avid philathropists and community members. Behind the scenes at White Pines is another well known member: Wendell Combs. Wendell has lived his whole life in Saybrook, with the exception of one heartbreaking foyer into the greater world. Now, as an Iraq war veteran, he works as caretaker of White Pines for the Lancaster. There he finds the solace and solitude he so desperately craves. On the eve of the annual ball, an tragedy befalls the town of Saybrook that rattles the little town to its core. At its heart are Wendell Combs and Julia Lancaster, two people tied to White Pines for very different reasons. As summer unfolds, the two will be forced to make decisions that impact not just their futures, but also that of the place they love so dearly.”

Author I draw inspiration from: Elin Hilderbrand

Favorite place to read a book: The beach! Off season, you can find me curled up on the couch with a dog, a cup of tea, and my book. There's no wrong place.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Phineas from A Separate Peace.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: 3rd grade in Mrs. Meyer's class when she announced there would be a young author's conference held at another school and that she would be selecting only three students to go.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Paperback! It has to fit in my beach bag or luggage when I travel

The last book I read: Therese Ann Fowler's A Good Neighborhood

Pen & paper or computer: Computer. But it used to be pen and paper, and it took a lot of getting used to!

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Judy Blume's Victoria Leonard from Summer Sisters

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: elementary school teacher (I used to be!)

Favorite decade in fashion history: 80's. It was so openly unapologetic!

Place I’d most like to travel: Capri Greece

My signature drink: Gin and tonic. I've always been a little old lady at heart.

Favorite artist: Chicago based painter Richard Schmidt

Number one on my bucket list: Raise two happy healthy daughters. After that, I'd like to retire on the New England coast

Anything else you'd like to add: I keep a flock of backyard chickens, am passionate about pet rescue, love to cook for friends and family, and New Englander
