Hi.

Welcome to Hasty Book List, where I document and review the books I read. Hope you have a nice stay!

Author I draw inspiration from: There are many: Stephen King, Elmore Leonard, Quentin Tarantino (I consider screenwriters to be authors), David Mamet, Jonathan Goldstein, Ira Glass, Jesse Ventura, Charles Bukowski, William S. Burroughs, Roger Ebert, and several others.

Favorite place to read a book: If it’s an audio book I like driving or walking at night and getting immersed in the story as I coast aimlessly.  For paperbacks or E-Books, you can’t beat the front porch with a drink in the late-night hours.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: The character of Glen Bateman from The Stand. I could listen to his hypothetical breakdown of a budding society for hours.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: Hard to pin down one moment but I was always attracted to storytelling whether it be circus-like-hyper-drama like Pro Wrestling, hard boiled crime movies, dark poetry, indie screenwriting, movie critiques, and great novels. When I was a child, I used to write stories about me and my dog in space having adventures.  First crack at a novel was when I was 21 or 22 which remained unfinished once I lost most of it due to a corrupted disc. Wrote one full novel before Solving Cadence Moore but once I had written Cadence, I knew I had gotten to the point where I’d written something good enough to be published.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Audiobook all the way.  I can consume so many books this way as I go about daily life and during late night drives. I can also hook up to some headphones and take long walks while listening to great stories.  It’s not quite the same as holding a book in my hands and reading it the old-fashioned way but I’m an auditory learner and by preference…an auditory reader.

The last book I read: How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence by Michael Pollan (Really fascinating history of psychedelics mixed with a personal journey story).

Pen & paper or computer: Computer: I never learned to type properly but eventually I got so fast at typing the wrong way that my friends have laughed for years at my freakish ability to type rapidly using only two fingers.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with: I’d really love to spend a few years under and above ground having adventures with the creature gang from The Wind in the Willows.

If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: Well I’ve been working for Penske Truck Leasing for 20 years while I was an author (this helps me eat regularly). But if I could do something that was a passion project and was not writing, I would love to be a lounge singer doing alternative covers of eclectic songs.

Favorite decade in fashion history: I’m a novice at fashion history but I will say that I love the way men in 70’s and very early 80’s movies dress.  Blazers as everyday casual wear, jackets and jeans, thick glasses, and leather boots.  My wife believes I have terrible taste.

Place I’d most like to travel: Top of the list had been New Orleans, LA but my current wife and I eloped there in 2017 so that one got crossed off the list (and it was awesome)! Next on the list at this point would probably be the United Arab Emirates to see the Burj Khalifa (Tower of Dubai) because I’m fascinated by the dark but wondrous instinct in men to create the biggest, tallest, greatest, and most spectacular structures.

My signature drink: Rum and Coke (or in reality…Bankers Club and generic cola). I drink for effect, not taste.

Favorite artist: Allie Brosh: No one I know of can do so much with so little and achieve such side splittingly hilarious results. She is remarkably talented and funny.

Number one on my bucket list: I got my MA in Philosophy in 2017 so for me, as a philosopher, there is only one answer. I want to find the truth of it all.  I’m about half way through life so I’d feel pretty good to know I might be half way to finding it. I try every day.
