Charles Todd
Author Interview - Charles Todd
Author I draw inspiration from:
CAROLINE: There are so many who have inspired me. But I’d have to say Dorothy Dunnett, whose historical novels impressed me years and years ago with their ability to engage the modern reader while bringing a complex past to life in a page-turning story.
CHARLES: Over the years so many authors have impacted my life and my perspective on the world around me. In the mystery genre Sir Arthur Conan Doyle amazed me primarily with his puzzle making skill and the unique characters he created. Beyond Holmes, Doyle managed to introduce his readers to people who lasted with us long after his stories ended.
Favorite place to read a book:
CAROLINE: Curled up in my favorite chair!
CHARLES: I am happy to read in any places where I can spend time with a good book. My surroundings disappear when I am drawn into the world an author creates.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:
CAROLINE: REACHER of course. He’d know how to get us out of there.
CHARLES: HERCULE PORIOT’s little gray cells would know what to do.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:
CAROLINE: When I was seven years old.
CHARLES: I always loved words and their use to persuade. It took many years to develop the patience to write a book.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:
CAROLINE: I like a book in my hand, hardcover or pb. But I love a Kindle for travel.
CHARLES: They all have their uses depending on the circumstances. I will always prefer a book to hold in my hand and feel the pages.
The last book I read:
CAROLINE: Anne Perry’s DEATH IN FOCUS
CHARLES: Nick Petrie’s THE WILD ONE
Pen & paper or computer:
CAROLINE: Both. If my computer isn’t handy, I always have paper to fall back on.
CHARLES: My computer is best. Sometimes I scribble and then can’t read my writing. My brain moves faster than my hands. This causes lots of problems. Nothing like typing a great scene only to realize my curser is on]the tool bar!
Book character I think I’d be best friends with:
CAROLINE: Oh that’s hard. Duncan Kincaid, for one. He’s an interesting man.
CHARLES: Nero Wolf, I think..
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a:
CAROLINE: A set designer for Broadway shows.
CHARLES: A Management Consultant
Favorite decade in fashion history:
CAROLINE: I love Twenties, That tall slim look. I’d love to be tall enough to wear that look.
CHARLES: The Forties
Place I’d most like to travel:
CAROLINE: I’ve been to 110 or 111 countries. But never to Iceland!
CHARLES: Greece
My signature drink:
CAROLINE: A Virgin Mohito or Drambuie.
CHARLES: A cup of good coffee.
Favorite artist:
CAROLINE: Turner.
CHARLES: Michelangelo
Number one on my bucket list:
CAROLINE: To watch one of our characters in a TV series.
CHARLES: I don’t have one. In so many ways working with Caroline and reaching so many with our books is a dream beyond my wildest imagination.
Anything else you'd like to add:
CAROLINE: My biggest thrill—starting a new book and feeling it start to take off.
CHARLES: My thrill is: Hearing from readers who enjoy our work and “get” what we were trying to express.
