Author Interview - Brooke Fossey
Author I draw inspiration from: I underline while reading—funny lines, great character work, interesting punctuation, etc.—and so every author leaves me with a bit of inspiration. But okay, I can be a team player. Helen Simonson, because she debuted with a beautiful book after having children and turning forty, proving that it could be done. J. Ryan Stradal, because he’s so generous with his talent. And Jonathan Evison, because of his writing work ethic and honesty.
Favorite place to read a book: In bed, but stay with me, because ambiance matters. All of the kids have to be tucked in for the night, the dishes have to be done, and I must be buried by a million blankets.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: Jason Bourne, because he would unstick us.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: When I finished writing my first manuscript, which I cobbled together during my kids’ naptime.
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: Hardcopy (because of the aforementioned underlining).
The last book I read:
Fiction - Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Nonfiction - Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling
Pen & paper or computer: Computer. On the rare occasion, I use pen and paper, my story looks like a flow chart. The delete key has spoiled me.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Jo March, hands down.
If I wasn’t an author, I’d be a: In advertising. I copywrite already, so this isn’t a stretch, but I love critiquing commercials, and I have great ideas kicking around for brands that need only hire me. My backup plan is screenwriting, obviously.
Favorite decade in fashion history: How about anything post-bustle and pre-polyester.
Place I’d most like to travel: Maine. Why? What’s there? Besides lighthouses, I have no idea, but someday I’m going.
My signature drink: French 75 in a rocks or highball glass because I cannot be trusted with stemware.
Favorite artist: Ben Folds
Number one on my bucket list: For all my children to be happy, healthy, contributing members of society.
