Author Interview - Andie J. Christopher
Author of THANK YOU, NEXT
Once upon a time, I saw a guy I had been involved with as the fiance on Say Yes to the Dress, and I've always wanted to write that incident into a story. When this happens to the protagonist of THANK YOU, NEXT, she goes on a journey through Los Angeles, tracking down her ex-boyfriends to find out why she's always the fling and never the ring. Along the way, she discovers that Mr. Right has been right in front of her nose all along.
Author I draw inspiration from: Over time, I've drawn inspiration from a lot of different authors. I started reading romance novels at ten, so I think my first answer would have been Jackie Collins. I always loved how bombastic she was and how she never shied away from the sexy bits. I think her heroines were so badass, and I hope my heroines live up to her standard. On the more contemporary side, I often ask myself, "What Would Tessa Bailey Do?" when I'm stuck in a story. I think she's the very very best of us.
Favorite place to read a book: Near a body of water. I read a book a day when I'm at the beach or at a lake house.
Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with: I'm going to choose my own character here. I wrote Jack Nolan from Not the Girl You Marry as my ideal boyfriend. As such, I would trust him to keep me calm and have snacks and creative ways to keep me occupied while we wait for help.
The moment I knew I wanted to become an author: I think I knew I wanted to be an author the first time I finished a romance novel and wrote an epilogue for the characters in my head. In fact, I started to write a Harlequin Presents when I was twelve. I wish I could still find those pages!
Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook: I mostly read ebook for romance, audiobook for nonfiction, and paperback for historical. I buy hardbacks if a friend wrote them or we're talking cookbooks.
The last book I read: I recently read HOOK LINE AND SINKER by Tessa Bailey. It's an insanely sexy friends-to-lovers story.
Pen & paper or computer: I outline on pen & paper and write prose on the computer. For some reason, I come up with more creative plot ideas on paper. But I can get my thoughts out more quickly typing.
Book character I think I’d be best friends with: Andrea Tang from The Last Tang Standing by Lauren Ho. This was one of my favorite books from 2020, and I don't think enough people screamed about it. Andrea is like a mix of Astrid from CRAZY, RICH ASIANS and Bridget Jones. We would cause pure havoc.
If I weren’t an author, I’d be a: I have a full-time day job, but I would probably paint, make pottery, and take up pole dancing if I didn't write romance.
Favorite decade in fashion history: The number of band tees and my joy at the return of bell bottoms will tell you that the 1970s are my very favorite decade in fashion.
Place I’d most like to travel: When I close my eyes and go to my happy place, it's the Maldives. I've never been, but I can almost feel the sea breeze on my face.
My signature drink: An Ina Garten-sized cosmopolitan on the weekend, and a perfect latte during the week. (I got a fancy espresso machine for my birthday, and it is FANTASTIC!)
Favorite artist: As an art history major, I feel like answering this is almost impossible. I am a huge fan of the Abstract Expressionist movement--particularly Helen Frankenthaler and Mark Rothko. However, I dream of buying a piece by my law school classmate, Julia Powell. She's a hugely talented painter, and her dreamy landscapes are totally my jam.
Number one on my bucket list: I don't really have a bucket list, because I tend to think of something I want to do and go for it.
