At Home with the Hastys - List of Firsts

The Backstory

New to Hasty Book List? Read about the fire that prompted this home renovation, here.

The Inspiration

We’ve had a LOT of time to think about this home. We spent a year saving up for the down payment and a year rebuilding after the fire. Two years we’ve spent planning for and dreaming about this home. When the rug was pulled out from under us, I sought a counselor to help me process what had happened. When the rebuild process was at its most stressful, she suggested we make a “List of Firsts” to focus on the positive aspects of the home (read a bit more about the anxiety I’ve experienced regarding returning to the source of the fire, here.) Here’s what we’ve come up with so far…

List of Firsts

(We haven’t decided on everything…so some are still blank)

Have suggestions for other “firsts” we should consider? Or have ideas for things we’ve left blank? Tell us about it on Facebook!

  • First breakfast we’ll make in our new kitchen: homemade biscuits and gravy

  • First dinner we’ll make in our new kitchen: homemade pizza (check out BakerBettie’s pizza dough recipe, here. This is is our go-to recipe.)

  • First movie: We had planned on Christmas Vacation…but now it is looking like we’ll be moving after Christmas so we have to re-think this one.

  • First cocktail: Gin and Tonic (this is my personal recipe for the Best Gin and Tonic Ever.)

  • First bottle of wine:

  • First BBQ on the smoker:

  • First guests: No one until COVID is under control! Maybe a virtual housewarming?

  • First cup of coffee: Hexe (this is our favorite coffee spot in Chicago)

  • First candle to burn: Probably something from Soy Candles by AJ - I’m thinking something from her Rest and Recharge collection, which is exactly what we’ll be doing in our new home

  • First piece of art to hang: Jenny McGee’s Dogwood (the first original piece of art we ever purchased.) No house feels like a home without it…

  • First restaurant delivery: We ate fried chicken sandwiches on the floor of our newly purchased condo the night we closed. I think we’ll order fried chicken sandwiches (probably from Bites, it is my current favorite) again the night we move back in.

  • First Peloton Ride:

  • First cigar (for Eric): Padron 28

  • First homemade dessert:

  • First playlist (probably while moving in): Kit of The Kittchen recently asked her Instagram followers for their favorite “happy” songs or mood boosters…I think the playlist she put together for that will be what we play while moving in.

  • First record to play on our new turntable:

  • First Bourbon (for Eric): Weller
